Affirmations are great for when a negative thought pops into our heads. You can tell that negative voice to stop and rephrase the words so that they are positive.
Affirmations provide reassurance and confidence in our abilities. They can be short “I’ve got this” or longer “I am enough, just as I am”.

Research suggests that the cutoff for working memory is 7 items. Choose between 5 and 7 affirmations from the lists below that you would ideally like to be true. These can come from any of the categories listed below. We suggest focusing on the life areas that relate to your current worries. You can choose any affirmations that resonate with you.

Your Best Possible Self
Sometimes we can get bogged down in the here and now, or even these things in our past. While it is important to be present and also learn from our past experiences, research has shown that we can increase our optimism by envisioning our Best Possible Self.
In fact, this exercise has been shown to boost people’s positive emotions, happiness levels, optimism, hope, improve coping skills, and elevate positive expectations about the future.
Write about your Best Possible Self
Imagine a future where you have achieved all your goals (this can be your in 6 months time, a year or 5 years). Write down what this would look like: Where do you live? What do you do? Who do you spend time with? What have your experienced and achieved?
Write as much detail as you can, making sure that your future best self is a person you like, that the image you have of your experiences and achievements is pleasing. Write about how you achieved your goals and what personality traits or character strengths you used in order to achieve them.
Tips About Being Your Best Possible Self
Now that you’ve written down your Best Possible Self, it’s a good idea to add this to your locker. You can revisit this exercise by re-reading the script or re-imagining your future.
Maybe you focus on a different aspect of your future or you use a different time-stamp (i.e. 5 years instead of 1 year).
Tips on Optimism Exercises
Research has shown that people with an optimistic outlook tend to be healthier, with better cardiovascular function and stronger immune systems. They also tend to take home a higher income and have more satisfactory relationships. So there are plenty of benefits to being more optimistic.
The good news is you can train yourself to be more optimistic. By working on your affirmations and writing about your best possible self, along with working through some of the other exercises in the TYF App (signature strengths and the Happiness/Sadness resources) you can become more optimistic, believing that good things will happen to you now and in your future.

The more positively you think about the future, the better. Good things can happen, so try to remind yourself that, that is the case.
